Jeff was featured in a segment on KUSC's Arts Alive radio program today talking about his long-running one-man theatrical show, Nevermore...An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe.
Click the play button to listen:
Alternately, you can click here to stream or click here to download the November 28th "Arts Alive" broadcast. (Jeff's interview starts at 24:33)
(Note: KUSC's podcast page may be having some server issues, so keep trying the download link periodically as it will work eventually!)
The interview was conducted by Laura Brodian Freas, whom we had the pleasure of meeting at a performance of Nevermore last month, and the music played at the beginning of the interview is the familiar Nevermore "theme music" that opens the play.
Thanks to Laura and her friend Bryan, whom we also had the pleasure of meeting at the same performance, the "Nevermore theme" is "Prélude a 7 Cordes" by Sainte-Colombe performed by Hille Perl. Listen to the hauntingly beautiful piece here.

Jeff on the Sheena Metal Experience
Jeff was recently a guest on the L.A. Talk Radio program, The Sheena Metal Experience in which he spoke about his acting career, his various characters, and his thoughts on doing his one-man show, Nevermore...an Evening with Edgar Allan Poe. This is one of our personal favorite new interviews with Jeff.
Listen to/download the show here or alternately, you can click here and stream the November 18th broadcast. (Jeff's interview starts at about 58:46)
In the interview, Jeff mentions his interest in doing more comedy. Much of his early theater background was light comedic roles and he appeared in one episode of the short-lived sitcom, The Single Guy in 1996. Click here to see a clip of Jeff from his episode, "The Virgin."
Tune in this Saturday to hear Jeff on KUSC's "Arts Alive" radio program.

New Review of "Nevermore" in The Examiner
Online entertainment magazine, The Examiner has just posted a brief review of Jeff's long-running theatrical one-man show, Nevermore...an Evening with Edgar Allan Poe.
Writer Jordan Young relates: "Regardless of your preconceived notions on solo performance, I recommend a visit to “Nevermore” - Combs' intoxicated rendition of “The Bells” is worth the price of admission by itself."

The Examiner also gave Nevermore another glowing review back in early September.
There are a mere eight performances of the show left here in Los Angeles, so don't miss out on your opportunity to see Nevermore at its original venue, before it possibly goes on the road.

"Re-Animator" Midnight Screening Report
BRIEF NEVERMORE UPDATE
We were able to catch Jeff's performance last night and they were indeed filming the show, but as Mr. Gordon has said, for now, it is only a record to garner interest from other theaters to bring the show to their venue. It is interesting to note that several aspects – including the omission of the familiar Nevermore "theme music" that opens and closes the show – and some of the lighting and staging were altered slightly, possibly for the recording. Here's hoping we all get an opportunity in the future to own a copy of Nevermore for ourselves, but for now, keep watching The Combs Corner to see if the show will possibly be touring close to your area.
There are a mere eight performances of Nevermore left here in Los Angeles, so don't miss out on this final opportunity to see the show at its original venue.

Last weekend, horror site ShockTilYouDrop hosted a special midnight screening of Jeff's classic film, Re-Animator at the revival theater, The New Beverly.

Robin Lewis-West, Stuart Gordon, and Jeff. Photo by Cat
Jeff, director Stuart Gordon, and costume designer Robin Lewis-West were in attendance for a brief, yet fun Q&A before the film, in which they related hilarious anecdotes about the filming of Re-Animator. Jeff spoke about both his role as Herbert West and his current role as Edgar Allan Poe in Nevermore.
The most interesting thing we learned is that Re-Animator won the Cannes Film Festival's Critics Prize without even trying! It was never entered in the festival, yet the rules are that any film being shown in Cannes at the time of the festival is eligible for nomination.
Re-Animator was filmed 25 years ago this month and will celebrate the 25th anniversary of its release next year. There is talk of a special anniversary blu-ray version of the film (hopefully with a new commentary), but nothing is definite yet. Keep watching The Combs Corner for more details.
Shock captured the evening in both photos and video.

Jeff on "Scooby Doo - Mystery, Inc."
Zoinks! According to Jeff's official site, today, he will be recording a voice for an episode of the upcoming cartoon series, Scooby Doo - Mystery, Inc.
EXCLUSIVE UPDATE: Jeff's episode is entitled "The Shrieking Horror" and centers around a professor/novelist called H.P. Hatecraft. (We think you can all guess who plays him!) There's also a special guest cameo voiced by legendary sci-fi writer, Harlan Ellison.
This latest incarnation of the long-running series is set in the small town of Crystal Cove, which is plagued by ghosts and other unexplained paranormal activity. And as usual, Scooby and the gang are on hand to get to the bottom of the mystery.
The series is scheduled to premiere on Cartoon Network in December.

This is the final extension for the show here in Hollywood, so don't miss out on your opportunity to spend the holiday season with Poe!
At a special Re-Animator midnight screening on Saturday, director Stuart Gordon revealed some new details about the show's future:

We spoke with Mr. Gordon directly after the screening and he told us that the filming was for "a record of the show" only. Combs Creations - "Nevermore" Room Box
Talented miniaturist and Combs Corner reader, Melanie created a special "room box" commemorating Jeff's return to the stage in his long-running one-man show, Nevermore...an Evening with Edgar Allan Poe.
Reserve Nevermore tickets here and show info here
After numerous progress reports over the past several months, at the special Halloween Nevermore show, we were fortunate enough to see the finished roombox for ourselves and speak with its creator. The piece is absolutely incredible in its detail and design, and Melanie was able to personally present it to Jeff at the show.
Click on any photo for full size.
Here are Melanie's thoughts on her creation:
The idea for a Nevermore room box came about as a combination of seeing the show for the first time in July, then reading an article in Miniature Collector about recreating scenes from books/movies/etc. as room boxes. Naturally, the idea to do a scene from Nevermore immediately popped into my head. While at the show, I made extensive sketches of the set, furniture, and the Poe costume, then raided my local dollhouse store for the necessary bits and settled down to work.
The Room Box
The box base is a Real Good Toys room box kit, 15"W x 5 1/4"D x 10"H, made from MDF with a clear Plexiglas front pane. After I ran through a couple of external decoration possibilities, my husband came up with the idea of making it look like an antique display case to match the period of the play. I wound up sheathing the box in cherry veneer, then added a Bombay mahogany stain and brass corner fittings to make it look appropriately Victorian.
The next step was constructing the stage in miniature. It's designed to copy the Steve Allen stage as well as the Nevermore set, with black walls, ceiling and proscenium, a black curtain on stage right and two red velvet curtains framing the stage. While building the framing supports, I realized that a stage set really should have working lights, so I ran Cir-Kit lighting tape along the walls and connected it to a battery pack beneath the stage (the stage front is designed so that it slides up, allowing the battery pack to be replaced as necessary), installed a rocker switch in the side wall, then attached two adjustable spotlights to the back wall. An additional strip of lighting tape under the stage flooring would power an electrified candle holder.
The Furniture
As the show uses fairly distinctive furniture, almost all of it had to be made from scratch. The lectern is made of brass strips and rods twisted with jewelry pliers, a vise and brute strength, then fastened together with JB-weld metal epoxy and coated with silver enamel and a light coat of matte black for a pewter effect. The chair is a combination of wood and brass with a faux grain finish and the table was purchased and stained to look like the full-sized version, with miniature books edged and embossed in gold ink, then glued to the top.
Since there are apparently no freestanding candle holders available for dollhouse lighting systems, I bought a light fixture with a candle and broke that down to get the candle and bulb, then attached it to the base of a non-functional candle holder and rewired the candle, drilling a hole in the table so that I could run the wire through it, down the table leg and into two holes in the floor that connected with the Cir-Kit wiring tape. The only store-bought and completely unmodified item in the box is the rug.
The Poe Figure
After I completed the furniture, I started working on the Poe doll. This is the first doll I've ever made, and I'm extremely pleased at how well it turned out. The head, hands and feet are sculpted from Fimo polymer modeling clay, and the face is based on promo pictures for Nevermore and Jeffrey's professional head shots from FedCon.
The doll has real hair made from black viscose, and clothing of white and black cotton batiste (for the shirt, waistcoat, frock coat and trousers), black 1/16 inch ribbon (for the neckcloth), ¼ inch black velvet ribbon (for the waistcoat lapels), and brown 1/16 inch ribbon (for the suspenders).
This is a little hidden "Easter Egg" on the wall of stage left - the figures in the background are Nevermore director Stuart Gordon and writer Dennis Paoli
The final touch was to add a decorative brass plate to the bottom of the Plexiglas window reading:
Commemorating the premiere of NEVERMORE,
starring Jeffrey Combs, written by Dennis Paoli, and directed by Stuart Gordon,
at the Steve Allen Theater, Hollywood, CA, 2009
All in all, I'm pleased with the results. And man, this was fun to build.
__________
Note: At the Halloween show, Jeff gave a special encore performance of Poe's poem, "The Conqueror Worm," that was in the original play, but was cut for time after the preview shows in July. This was an unexpected treat that capped off the evening perfectly.

At last weekend's special Halloween show, the audience was treated to an unexpected encore of Jeff performing Poe's poem, "The Conqueror Worm," which was part of the original preview night performance at the beginning of the play's run in July, but was unfortunately edited for time.
And just for fun, to show how eclectic and wide an audience Nevermore has, bassist of the famed rock band Mötley Crüe recently updated his MySpace page with this message:
"I took Katherine [Nikki's girlfriend, tattoo artist and 'L.A. Ink' star Kat Von D] to see Nevermore - An Evening With Edgar Allan Poe at the Steve Allen Theater in Hollywood. Jeffrey Combs delivers the arrow to the heart in this one-man play. This is a must-see. We loveeeeed it."

New Article on Jeff at "Backstage"
There is a new article at Backstage that profiles several actors who have recently performed or are now performing successful one-person plays and their impact on the theater world. Jeff and his long-running one-man show, Nevermore...an Evening with Edgar Allan Poe are featured prominently in the article.
In the piece, Jeff relates why he wanted to portray Poe onstage:
"...precisely because it was a huge challenge." He recalls, "I wondered, 'Could I entertain and enlighten an audience for an hour and a half? Can I find the format that follows a path and at the same time breaks the mold?'"
The article also relates:
"Combs says learning all the lines, including some of Poe's poems and stories, is grueling too. One virtue in playing Poe, however, is Combs' understanding of the man. He says any actor can relate to Poe. "If I had to encapsulate Poe in one phrase, I'd say, 'What's a guy got to do?' What's a guy got to do to achieve respect, success, and admiration from my peers and public? I also relate to his melancholic nature and his sadness. My method is not as internal as external. Nothing informs me more than getting into makeup and costume, especially the shoes. The shoes have always been very important to me. They're the touchstones. In this piece I'm wearing black ankle-high boots. They make me feel the period and also make me carry myself more elegantly, aligned, straighter. I also listen to music before I go on."
There is also talk of possibly bringing Nevermore to a wider audience:
Combs also feels he has returned to his theater roots and would love to bring his show to New York for an Off-Broadway run, not simply because Poe lived in New York but because for Combs New York is the mecca for theater. But, despite the fine reviews he has earned, the exposure, and the fact that he has a following, "it doesn't translate," he says. "There's a disconnect between New York and Los Angeles." As a further plea, he points out his show is low-cost. Listen up, producers.
Indeed! Nevermore will continue its successful run here in Los Angeles Fridays and Saturdays through December 19th...and the show's future is wide open after that point. There is talk of having Jeff perform Nevermore in Baltimore for Poe's birthday celebration in January and director Stuart Gordon is in the process of trying to secure a theater in Chicago for a possible run there as well. Here's hoping (off)Broadway isn't far behind.

Combs Curios - "The Halloween Trilogy"
Every so often, we like to feature some of Jeff's more rare appearances at The Combs Corner. These "curios" are often very hard to find, being guest spots from long-gone television series or relatively obscure films. Over the years, thanks to many people, we have collected most of them and are pleased to be able to share their storylines with you.
This seasonal Combs Curio is Jeff's only televised live theatrical performance (so far) besides the 1983 PBS broadcast of The Skin of Our Teeth from the Old Globe Theater in San Diego.
Alien Voices - "The Halloween Trilogy," 1998
Background: Fellow Star Trek actors Leonard Nimoy and John DeLancie created a company in 1996 called Alien Voices. Their mission was to bring classic sci-fi and horror literature to a wider audience through radio plays they produced for audio cassette (through Simon and Schuster) and videos that they sold through their (now defunct) website. The programs also aired on both the Sci-Fi Channel and National Public Radio.
Halloween Trilogy was Alien Voices' special Halloween broadcast that aired on the Sci-Fi Channel on October 25, 1998. It was comprised of three classic tales of terror: "The Mark of the Beast" by Rudyard Kipling, "The Canterville Ghost" by Oscar Wilde, and "The Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allan Poe. Nimoy, DeLancie, Jeff, as well as many other Trek actors performed the pieces as a radio play complete with a sound effects crew in front of a live audience.
Dwight Schultz and Jeff
"The Mark of the Beast"
This story by Rudyard Kipling revolves around three friends in India, Fleete (Jeff), Strickland (Dwight Schultz - Barkley on The Next Generation), and the narrator (John DeLancie - Q on The Next Generation) who after a night of drinking, take a shortcut and stumble upon a sacred ceremony to an ancient monkey god. The most boisterous of the three, Fleete interferes, killing several of the baby monkeys and stubbing out his cigar on a large stone statue of the god, angering the worshippers. Before they can escape, one of the followers who seems more beast than man sinks his teeth into Fleete's chest, mortally wounding him.
"Here kitty...here kitty, kitty, kitty..."
The two friends drag the delirious Fleete to Dr. Vice (Leonard Nimoy) who pronounces he has been stricken with the mark of the beast! When Fleete is roused into consciousness, he exclaims he is hungry, and pounces on the doctor's cat, disemboweling it. The friends soon realize what they once knew as Fleete is gone and an evil spirit has possessed him.
The friends take the doctor's suggestion and tie Fleete to a chair, hoping that he will be better in the morning. All the while, Fleete mumbles about his strange cravings for monkey brains sautéed in blood. Suddenly, a strange howl comes from outside, and Fleete instantly reacts, emitting a bloodcurdling scream in response. Fleete's eyes are now beady and yellow and his skin is covered in fur - he is now more beast than man. As dawn breaks the two friends and the doctor leave their hiding place in the closet to find only traces of Fleete's torn clothing. They vow to never speak of this terrible night again.
The sound effects people all dressed as skeletons to give the piece a more spooky air
Since this is a radio play, the actors get a chance to interact with the special sound effects, and we as an audience are let in on how they're performed. When Fleete is initially bitten by one of the monkey god followers, a large stalk of celery is used to imitate the teeth puncturing his chest and cooked pasta and lettuce are used to simulate Fleet eating Dr. Vice's cat's innards.

"The Canterville Ghost"
This tale by Oscar Wilde follows the story of an American family who move into an old English mansion haunted by a ghost. Instead of being afraid or threatened by the spirit, the family becomes intrigued and considers the ghost an amusing quirk of the estate. Jeff plays the young troublemaking son, Washington, who does everything in his power to annoy this friendly ghost.
Upon the family's arrival, the landlady regales the tale of Simon DeCanterville, who killed his wife in the castle over three hundred years ago and still roams its halls. Soon after, the ghost (John DeLancie) makes himself known and the family, instead of being frightened, are rather annoyed by his clanking armor and moaning that keeps them up at night.
Sir Simon continues to try and frighten the family, only causing them more mirth. Washington delights in hitting the ghost with a peashooter, then tries to engage him in a pillow fight. Washington's father (Leonard Nimoy) suggests oil to calm the ghost's creaky armor. Sir Simon is devastated that he is no longer scary and goes into hiding. The young daughter (Francis Bay), intrigued by the ghost's plight befriends him and with her help, Sir Simon finally finds peace in the afterlife.

TRIVIA
• Jeff has worked previously with several of the actors in Halloween Trilogy during his theater days. He and Kurtwood Smith were both part of the South Coast Repertory company in Orange County in 1985 and also appeared in a one-act play together in Los Angeles entitled, "Guises" in 1984. Francis Bay and Jeff appeared in the same episode of Hunter in 1992.
• In 1999, Jeff lent his distinct voice to another classic tale when he recorded "Jeffrey Combs Reads H.P. Lovecraft's Herbert West - Re-Animator," upon which the Re-Animator films are based.
• Halloween Trilogy is not listed in Jeff's IMDB, nor any of the other actors' who appear in the show.
• Interestingly, the only trilogy story in which Jeff does not appear is "The Cask of Amontillado," written by Edgar Allan Poe, whom he is currently portraying onstage in Nevermore...an Evening with Edgar Allan Poe here in Hollywood.
Many thanks to Margitta and Ibolya for sending us a copy of this rare seasonal treat!

"Dark House" Screening in Italy

Jeff's new thriller, Dark House (official site here) will screen at the Ravenna Nightmare Film Festival on October 28th at 10:30pm in Ravenna, Italy.
Directed by Darin Scott, with whom Jeff has worked on Love and a .45, Caught Up, and the upcoming graphic novel adaptation, The Night Driver, Jeff plays Walston Rey, "the self-proclaimed King of Horror Haunts," who turns a former foster home with a bloody past into a "haunted mansion for the ages" for Halloween. A young woman named Claire returns to the house in hopes of exorcising her past. When she and some of her acting students are hired to perform in Rey's show, a new string of grisly murders begins and we discover the house may truly be haunted!
Dark House won "Best Horror Feature Film" at Shriekfest when it had its North American premiere here in Los Angeles last month (read our review here). Here's hoping it brings home another prize from Ravenna!
And just for fun, here's the synopsis of the film from the program:
La vecchia casa, teatro anni prima di un terribile massacro, viene trasformata nel progetto Dark House: un nuovo entertainment tra videogame e tunnel da luna park, un gioco horror basato sulle immagini olografiche. Ma il sistema va alla deriva: gli ologrammi dei mostri diventano veri...

"Nevermore" Review by Creepy L.A.
Los Angeles Halloween blog, Creepy L.A. just published a wonderful review of Jeff's one-man theatrical show, Nevermore...an Evening with Edgar Allan Poe.
Here is the review in its entirety, written by Richard A. Becker:
Combs is incandescent in “Nevermore”
This last Friday night, I caught Jeffrey Combs’ performance in “Nevermore,” a one-man show based on the life of Edgar Allan Poe written by Dennis Paoli and directed by Stuart (FROM BEYOND) Gordon. And nothing could have prepared me for the delightful shock in store for me.
There are a number of ways to measure the caliber of an actor. Among them: You can consider the sheer power of the emotions they convey. You can look at their craft and the technical points of how they carry out their performance. You can take into account the degree to which they vanish into their character, taking you on a journey into another world and showing someone that they manifestly are not.
In Jeffrey Combs’ case, he apparently chose to ace “all of the above” for his depiction of Poe, with an amazing and entertaining performance that lights up the stage.
Fans of Combs’ work are legion, but they will be met with the same astonishing surprise that I received from his Poe. It’s simply this: I sat 8-10 feet away from him, and for the first 15 minutes of the play, I wondered… is that really Jeffrey Combs up there? It isn’t merely the top-quality makeup, costume and hairstyling that startlingly change his appearance. It’s his voice, his mannerisms, everything else as well. Rather than the beloved Herbert West, or Crawford Tillinghast, or any of the characters he’s brought to life, it’s a fascinatingly real and human portrait of an author who is often misunderstood — in our time, and in his own.
Combs’ Poe isn’t a stock figure of macabre imagination like something out of THE ADDAMS FAMILY. He’s a troubled Southern writer and editor suffering from his very real demons while trying to entertain a mid-Victorian salon (the audience) that can’t help but see all of his flaws. A great deal of Poe’s verse and prose is distractingly florid and purple on the page, and Combs (and Paoli and Gordon) makes no effort to hide this. In fact, he emphasizes how 19th century actors (like Poe’s own parents) would declaim the words on a stage, yet does so without lampooning Poe in any way.
Come to “Nevermore” and be surprised by the humanity of Poe and the brilliance of Combs, Paoli and Gordon.

• ShockTilYouDrop caught up with Nevermore director Stuart Gordon who gave them some exclusive info about the show and Jeff's performance. Read it here.
• There is an interview with Jeff and Stuart Gordon in the latest issue of Rue Morgue magazine. Read it here (And although the article lists this blog as a contact, this is a mistake. We are not official in any way, just a fanblog.)
• Stuart Gordon was recently at the Madison Horror Film Fest in Wisconsin and according to a report at FlamesRising.com, Gordon is "lobbying some Chicago theatres to bring the production to the Midwest." There is also talk of having Jeff perform the show at the anniversary of Poe's birth in Baltimore next January! Here's hoping you East Coasters will get a chance to see Nevermore as well!
On a personal note, Jeff dedicated Nevermore to his older brother, Gary, who sadly passed away at the end of September. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Jeff as his family during this difficult time. If you'd like to donate to Gary's preferred charity, the Arroyo Grande High School Athletics Foundation, please follow this link for more information and please give blood wherever you can. Thank you.

"Jeffrey’s been in almost everything I’ve ever done since DEEP SPACE NINE. It’s not always the easiest thing to find the exact role that you want for the actor that you want. But obviously, yes [there is thought given to finding appropriate roles for them]."
It would be awesome to see Jeff work with Ira again, so here's hoping he gets a role on Crash!
• Michael Dougherty's soon-to-be classic Halloween film, Trick R Treat is out on DVD this month and one of the stories in the film is a wonderful homage to Jeff's portrayal of his iconic character, Dr. Herbert West from Re-Animator! We were fortunate to see a screening of the film earlier this year and absolutely loved this wonderful and humorous tribute!

Happy Re-Animator Day!
October 10th, 10:33pm...
"Yes, I think...you!"
This may seem like an ordinary day and time to most, but this is a special day for Re-Animator fans.
In the late evening of October 10th, doctors Herbert West (Jeff) and Dan Cain (Bruce Abbott) cajoled their way past the guard into the Miskatonic Morgue with a sole purpose - to re-animate their first human subject!
After Dr. West injected 15cc's of reagent with no results, he chose to re-inject the subject with another 20cc's...and the results were soon very evident!
We propose that today, October 10th become official Re-Animator Day!
Celebrate by watching the film with friends, at a local theater, or just by yourself! You can also use our special "audience participation" we created several years ago to make the film even more fun! (As some of the participation is a little "risqué," please email us for the link if you're interested.)
And check out the infamous re-animation scene below:

"Dark House" Review

UPDATE: Dark House has won the "Best Horror Feature Film" at Shriekfest! Congratulations to writer/director Darin Scott, Jeff, and the rest of the cast and crew! This is very exciting! (You had our vote!)
The Chaplin Theater is a small screening room nestled in the Raleigh Studios on Melrose Avenue, home to shows like "Ugly Betty" and "Private Practice." Walking to the theater, one must pass through the backlot, which is littered with props and lighting. This set a nice tone for the evening to come as I settled myself in a very comfortable seat in the intimate theater and waited for the show to begin.
Directed by Darin Scott, with whom Jeff has worked on Love and a .45, Caught Up, and the upcoming graphic novel adaptation, The Night Driver, Dark House follows a young woman, Claire (Meghan Ory), who as a child is forced to follow the bizarre religious practices of her strict caretaker, Mrs. Darrode (Diane Salinger). Sick of being under her evil spell, Claire and her fellow orphans burn Mrs. Darrode's religious books, driving her to a vicious rampage.
Hidden in a small closet, Claire watches while her fellow foster children are brutally murdered by Mrs. Darrode for disobeying her orders. After the incident Claire is quickly adopted by a loving family, but she never fully recovers from that night. Now part of a local acting troupe, to gain closure from the incident, Claire's therapist suggests she return to the Darrode House and face her fears so she can finally put them behind her for good.
Enter Walston Rey (Jeff), a fantastically flamboyant entrepreneur who owns many haunted house attractions up and down the East Coast. Walston has recently purchased the Darrode Manor, and has turned it into his greatest achievement, Dark House, a "haunted house for the ages." Once the king of the macabre, Rey is quickly losing money and his other attractions are suffering. He needs something big to put him back on top and hopes that opening a haunted house at the site of an actual grisly incident will be a great selling point.
From the first moment Jeff bounds on to the screen with his delicious salt and pepper goatee, fussy cravat, and black cane, he owns the role of Walston. He gives the character this larger than life persona without becoming a caricature, infusing Walston with an underlying effeteness and humor that gives him an irresistible charm. Walston is the ringmaster of his own personal macabre circus and relishes the role greatly.
Walston gives Claire's apathetic acting troupe his best pitch, hoping to win them over as potential members of his newest attraction. Although his offer sounds less than appealing, Claire convinces her fellow actors this is a great idea and they decide to take the job. The house is rigged with the latest technology, utilizing a complex computer system that senses movement and fear in anyone who enters, triggering incredibly realistic holograms that interact with the patrons, including an axe-wielding clown and a banshee with dangerously sharp claws.
Unbeknownst to anyone, Mrs. Darrode still inhabits Dark House and her ghost is bent on revenge. Infiltrating the mainframe of the computer, the spirit sets up a deadly virus that soon turns the holograms into real beings who play out their gruesome roles. When two reporters are killed by the attraction, the actors panic and realize that something other-worldly is behind their deaths. They must find a way to shut down the attraction before everyone becomes its victim!
Not wanting to believe that the house is actually haunted, Walston blames the malfunction on the computer tech for his ineptness and begins hurling hilariously alliterative expletives at anyone who will listen. Many of Jeff's lines sound so spontaneous and work so well with the character, one wonders if he ad libbed them. He has this wonderful natural comic timing and he was truly able to show it off full force in this role. Walston also allows Jeff to show off his amazing physicality. There is a scene in which the entrepreneur is so furious that he literally hurls himself bodily against a large door several times, fruitlessly trying to get to the computer mainframe downstairs.
Jeff also utilizes Walston's theatrical walking cane so well, making it not only a prop, but an extension of the character. The cane is in almost constant motion, Walston either twirling it or using it as a way to embellish his grandiose speeches with a physical flourish. Even when Walston needs the use of both of his hands to drag away the first victim of Dark House, he doesn't drop the cane, but puts it between his teeth, which was absolutely hilarious.
At Fangoria Los Angeles, director Darin Scott mentioned that Jeff "...takes over the screen, so I basically just put the frame around him and let him go. I know something cool's gonna happen when he's onscreen." Giving Jeff this type of freedom to really explore and shape Walston as a character is wonderfully evident in the film and it's fantastic to see what he can do with a role when given the full freedom to make it his own. Having given him the opportunity to play a Southern junkie hitman in Love and a .45 and a broken security guard in Caught Up, in Walston, Scott allows Jeff yet another wonderful chance to show his true range and diversity as an actor.
It was also very refreshing to see Jeff play a "good guy" for once. Although Walston was more concerned with the money he may lose if the negative publicity got out about the faulty attraction, he was not behind the menacing act itself. Jeff gives Walston such charm and charisma, you can't help but like him, even though he seems to care more about his attractions than its patrons. It was especially wonderful to see Jeff's performance on the big screen as he is so mesmerizing to watch and is so adept at facial nuance that just a mere flick of his head or look in his eyes speaks volumes.
The film has a definite House on Haunted Hill vibe and doesn't take itself too seriously, which makes it really fun to watch. Meghan Ory was quite good as Claire – having to spend most of the film in a state of extreme paranoia, she tread the line of sanity well, making the character always on the verge of breakdown until the very final scene. Also worth noting were Bevin Prince as the hilariously snobby Valley Girl, Scott Whyte as Walston's fanboyish assistant, and Diane Salinger, playing Mrs. Darrode as an orphan's worst nightmare – Mrs. Hannigan on acid.
Dark House is a fun romp through the genre that hearkens back to the "good old days" of horror films of the 1980s. Here's hoping it will be out on DVD soon, so everyone can enjoy it!

Another New "Nevermore" Interview
RobG from ShockTilYouDrop recently caught up with Stuart Gordon, the director of Jeff’s amazing one-man theatrical show, Nevermore…an Evening with Edgar Allan Poe and got some exclusive info and insights into the play and Jeff’s performance.
Read the full interview here
Gordon mentions Jeff's thoughts on doing the show:
"Jeffrey says that it's like climbing a mountain every night. It really is a marathon for him. He's exhausted by the time it's done, but he really does give it his all."
This is a true testament to how deeply Jeff immerses himself in the role. He not only plays the writer, he becomes Poe on a nightly basis!
Gordon also mentions:
"Jeffrey is constantly growing and trying new things and every night is a little different. And I say again, that’s one of the great things about live theater is that the audience is always different. So he changes the show each night and makes little adjustments and adds things and gets inspiration and so forth. That's the great thing about Jeffrey Combs as an actor. You never get tired of watching him."
Jeff's performance is absolutely incredible and it's wonderful to see the show grow and develop into something that's truly his own.
Gordon also talks about both the possibility of extending the show past October and recording it! Here's hoping both ideas come to fruition, so even more people can see the show for themselves!

In the comments on this interview at ShockTilYouDrop, Poe museum curator Jeff Jerome reiterates that many of the Baltimore Poe bicentennial events were already scheduled by the time Nevermore came into being, but mentions that there is a distinct possibility of bringing the show to the East Coast for Poe's birthday next January! How awesome would that be?!

New "Nevermore" Interview with Jeff

It's very true that no two nights are the same for Jeff's performances, which makes each one special.
